Broken Promises, Series.
by Claire Pickard
Dare if you will, to dive into the fantasy world of Gear, a world of mystery and intrigue, where magic still thrives in the wild places, but with the expansion of technology the magic is fading from the world itself, and the memory of mankind. Gear is home to ancient forests, tall mountains, barren deserts, twisting rivers, supposedly bottomless lakes and an almost circular ocean. Where the planet of Gear differs, is in the fact that it has two moons, Beastman races such as the Wolfguard, magic wielders, dragons, monsters and spirits. However the world of Gear is not so dissimilar to our own world Earth, it’s always possible they exist closer together than you can imagine, just in different dimensions. The Arten scholars from the glory days of old, believed that dimensions were separated by the thickness of a shadow, and at the same time a distance further than that between galaxies.
Book One, Beginnings.
Follow Keyanna Lance on her epic journey to restore the balance of magic before it’s too late. She is a descendant of a half forgotten race of enhanced humans called Artens. Three hundred years have passed since the great civilisation of the Arten’s fell into ruin and now there are only a few of her people left, living in an isolated mountain community. Leaving home with ill-fitting armour and a sword she cannot wield, Keyanna is poorly equipped for this journey, but she is determined if nothing else. With no magic skills of her own, Keyanna must learn to wield her sword and fight with a style of her own.
During her travels Keyanna comes to know the forest spirits, unicorns and the wolf people called the Wolfguard. Along with these new and unusual friends, she encounters the monsters from the rift dimensions, who are anything but friendly. On her journey she will meet mercenaries, scholars and a Prince, some of these people are very different from how you or she might have imagined them. No adventure in the world of Gear would be complete without, battling fearsome monsters against unbelievable odds, and discovering something new about yourself as well.
Have you ever had that feeling that someone is watching you? Or that you saw someone standing in a shadow? But when you look again there is no one there. Too often for it to be normal paranoia, Keyanna comes to realise that she is followed by a shadowy figure tracking her movements, but she has no idea whether this shadowy presence is evil or benign. To make her feel more uneasy, she begins to think that her mentor and guide Tiana Kenzake, is keeping a secret or two.
Alongside these secrets there is a greater mystery, no one knows for sure what happened three hundred years ago, to bring down the mighty civilisation of the Arton’s in a single day. A civilisation so advanced they could move mountains in minutes, delve through the mysteries of multi-dimensions and construct gravity defying flying ships almost too big to be imagined. Broken Promises, book one, ‘Beginnings’, doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but it is the first step to uncovering the truth about the Artens, and what exactly Tiana is hiding. Of course, you are bound to find out many other things, as you follow the often clueless Keyanna, on her daring adventure into a world she knows little about.

Book Tow, Journey.
The second instalment in the broken promise series picks up right where the first book ended. Keyanna is travelling across the Barren Straights with Captain Jim, heading for the war-torn country of Daycut, but this voyage doesn’t turn out to be an easy one. So far Keyanna’s journey has been mostly playing sailing, alright a few monsters have tried to kill her and a few people have stood in her way, but that’s nothing compared to the challenges facing her now.
Before Keyanna set out on her journey she was warned that she shouldn’t trust foreign food, within days of arriving in Daycut such a meal crosses Keyanna’s path. She has stumbled into something far bigger than herself. After escaping an ambush she realises she has attracted the attention of people who she should have avoided. Almost permanently on the run from the dark element of the local military, and the onset of the bad winter weather she has no choice but to keep moving. Keyanna will face the perils that both the open sea and the darkest forest have to throw at her, as she makes a dash to the possible safety across the border in Chinniser.
With one fret left behind her Keyanna must face another, possibly boredom for the first time on her journey, as she travels with a merchant caravan slowly heading south to the great capital city Orentallist. The figure in the shadows appears whenever Keyanna is not expecting it to, and even helps her out whilst remaining hidden. This figure’s identity remains a mystery although now Keyanna is almost convinced that the figure is a protector.
While she tries to avoid danger it has a habit of following her, and more than once it catches up with her, this puts more than one of her new friends in deadly peril. Will any of them be able to survive their association with Keyanna? As she seems to have made more enemies than allies.
Through the flashback memories of her great-grandfather Miguel, Keyanna will gain a little more knowledge towards uncovering the truth about what happened to the Artens 300 years ago. Whilst the picture of the long past events in Art slowly become clear, Keyanna cannot shake the feeling that Tiana is still hiding something. Will Tiana’s secret come out? Will Keyanna make it to Orentallist, without gaining a few more physical or emotional scars? Will the mysteries of the aurora borealis be revealed? You’ll have to read the full story, to discover the answer to one or more of these questions.
